Andrew J. Patterson, MD, PhD
Dr. Patterson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He completed undergraduate school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed medical school and internship in Internal Medicine at Emory University. He completed residency and chief residency in Anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He also completed a Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed a PhD in Neurosciences at Stanford University. His PhD thesis advisor was Noble Laureate, Dr. Brian Kobilka. Dr. Patterson served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Emory University from 2019 until 2024. From 2015 until 2019, he served as Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Prior to 2015, Dr. Patterson was a member of the faculty at Stanford University, where he served as Division Chief of Critical Care and Program Director for the critical care anesthesiology fellowship. Dr. Patterson has served on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Anesthesiology as well as the Council (Board of Directors) of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has also served on the Review Committee for Anesthesiology for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Dr. Patterson works clinically as an operating room anesthesiologist and as an intensive care unit physician. Throughout the COVID pandemic, he worked in the COVID ECMO ICU at Emory University Hospital. Dr. Patterson has been involved in global health and humanitarian aid work for more than 30 years. He has led clinical, education, research, and infrastructure development initiatives in South and Central America, as well as Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
