In Memory of Harvey Allan Gabert, MD
It is with profound sadness that the LSU Health Foundation announces the loss of Dr. Harvey Allan Gabert, who passed away peacefully at his home on July 28th, 2016 surrounded by family and friends. He was 89 years old and will be deeply missed.
Dr. Gabert was a gifted physician with a personal warmth that touched everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. His confident, competent demeanor was a source of comfort to his patients. He was a strong and gentle physician who was always true to his Hippocratic Oath.
Dr. Gabert considered his two most important honors received as being named Abe Mickal Professor and Chair of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department and the establishment of the Harvey A. Gabert Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2005, one of the most successful campaigns in the history of the LSU Health Sciences Center. That this campaign was fully funded in 24 months is a testament to the profound respect and admiration that Dr. Gabert received throughout his 20-year tenure as a member and chair of the OB/GYN department.
As one of the first board-certified perinatologists in the United States, he performed and established the role of ultrasonography, amniocentesis, Doppler ultrasound and various diagnostic techniques to advance the care of women and newborn infants. During his tenure, his vision helped establish the OB/GYN department as a major force in maternal-child health in southern Louisiana.
Survived by his wife of 35 years, Ave Maria, daughter Susan McIntosh (Daniel), grandsons Bennett and Emerson McIntosh, granddaughters Brooke and Tara Feller, great-grandson Christian Cooke.
